Fears over the coronavirus outbreak have forced the cancellation or postponement of a number of events in the UAE, as authorities urge people to avoid “panic” over the potential spread of the disease.

The Art Dubai 2020 fair, the Taste of Dubai festival, the Global Forum in Innovation in Agriculture, the Club Social 2020 Music Festival, and the International Triathlon Union Abu Dhabi 2020 are some of the events scheduled to take place in March that are facing setbacks.

Also facing major disruption was the planned DJ Mag Middle East and the Ultra Abu Dhabi dance music events – both part of Abu Dhabi Music Week – which were both cancelled this week.

Meanwhile, authorities have begun preventive measures against Covid-19 transmission, including passenger screening at airports, installing temperature scanners at the entrance of prayer halls, and an overall increase in cleaning procedures.

Dr Abdulla Al Rasasi, head of preventive medicine in the DHA’s Public Health Protection Department, told press: “My advice to the community is to avoid getting into panic mode.

“We have medical teams at Dubai airports and these teams are present 24/7. If you greet someone with respiratory symptoms, do not touch their hands or hug them.

“If you don’t have access to soap and water, use a hand sanitiser.”
