Meet the Makers
So, who are these undisputed truth-tellers? They're a funk and soul band formed in Detroit in the late 60s. Talk about a powerhouse lineup - they were produced by the legendary Motown label! But here's where it gets interesting: they were actually created by Norman Whitfield, a Motown writer and producer, as a vehicle for his own material.
Enter the Hit
Now, let's talk about Girl You Know. Released in 1971, it was the band's first single and boy, did it make an entrance! It spent 15 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 16. Not too shabby for a debut!

That Iconic Hook
You know the one - "Ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah, girl you know..." It's like a musical earworm that just won't quit! But did you know the song was originally written for The Temptations? Yep, true story! Whitfield wanted David Ruffin to sing it, but the Tempts passed, and the rest is history.
Funky Facts
Here's where we get into the nitty-gritty. Did you know that the song's intro was created by a guitar being played with a coin? No kidding! And that bassline? It's so funky, it's been sampled by everyone from Snoop Dogg to Dizzee Rascal.
Girl You Know It's True (Remix) - YouTube
But here's where it gets really wild: the song was originally titled Girl (You Make Me Wanna) Shout. Can you imagine if that's what we were all singing along to? "Girl, you make me wanna shout, ah ah ah ah..." Now that's a party starter!
Legacy Lives On
Fast forward to today, and Girl You Know is still going strong. It's been covered by everyone from Eddie Murphy (yes, that Eddie Murphy) to Mark Ronson. And let's not forget its appearance in the movie Boogie Nights. Talk about a timeless tune!
So next time you find yourself humming that familiar hook, give a little nod to The Undisputed Truth. They might not be as well-known as some other Motown acts, but their legacy lives on, one "ah ah ah ah" at a time.
