Ok Google Ok Google Thank You

So, there I was, hands full with groceries, trying to unlock my front door. I was juggling a couple of bags, and my keys were, of course, at the bottom of the bag I couldn't reach. I was just about to give up and do an impersonation of a contortionist when I remembered, "Hey, I've got this!" I blurted out, "Ok Google, unlock the door." And wouldn't you know it, my smart lock clicked open. That, my friends, was my "Aha!" moment with voice assistants.

Now, I'm sure you've had your own moments with voice assistants, be it Google, Alexa, or Siri. They've become our digital sidekicks, always ready with a joke, a weather update, or a reminder to buy milk. But have you ever stopped to think about how we've all collectively agreed to start our conversations with, "Ok Google"?

From "Hello" to "Ok Google"

Let's rewind a bit. Remember when we used to pick up our phones and say, "Hello"? We'd wait for a human voice to respond, expecting a conversation. Now, we're saying, "Ok Google" to a machine, and we're perfectly fine with it. In fact, we expect it to respond. What's changed?

Well, for starters, we've gotten lazy. No, no, hear me out. We've gotten efficient. We've realized that we can get things done quicker by talking to a machine than by waiting for a human. Plus, let's face it, machines don't judge. You can ask Google the silliest question, and it won't bat an eye. Try that with a human, and you might get a raised eyebrow or two.

"Thank You", Google?

Now, let's talk about the "Thank You" part. Why do we say "Thank You" to Google? Is it because we're polite? Or is it because we've been conditioned to? I mean, think about it. When was the last time Google said "Please" or "Thank You" to you? Exactly.

I like to think of it as a form of digital etiquette. We say "Thank You" to Google because it's our way of acknowledging that it's helped us. It's our way of saying, "I appreciate your service." Plus, it's a nice way to end a conversation, don't you think?

But here's the thing. Google doesn't need our "Thank You". It's not going to feel appreciated or unappreciated based on our manners. So, why do we do it? Because it makes us feel good. It makes us feel like we're interacting with a real person, not a machine. It's our way of humanizing technology.

So, What's Next?

Who knows? Maybe one day we'll be saying, "Ok Google, take me to Mars" and it'll respond, "Thank You for choosing Google Space Travel. Have a pleasant journey." Stranger things have happened, right?

For now, though, let's just enjoy our "Ok Google, Ok Google, Thank You" conversations. They might seem silly, but they're a testament to how far we've come with technology. And who knows? Maybe one day, our grandchildren will look back and laugh at how we used to talk to machines.
