What Is A Good Salary In Uk

So, I was at the pub the other night, right? And I bumped into old mate, Tim. Now, Tim's been living the dream in London for a while now, and he's always been one to flash the cash. I mean, the guy's got more watches than a Swiss clockmaker, and he's always paying for rounds with a wad of notes that'd make Scrooge McDuck proud. I couldn't help but ask, "Tim, what's your secret? What's a good salary in the UK these days?"

He just laughed and said, "Well, mate, it's all relative, isn't it? What's a good salary for one person might not cut it for another." And he's not wrong, is he? I mean, if you're living in a tiny flat in London, you're probably going to need more than someone living in a three-bedroom house in Bradford. But still, I was curious. So, I did a bit of digging, and here's what I found out.

What's the Average Joe Earning?

According to the Office for National Statistics, the median annual earnings for full-time employees in the UK are around £31,400. That's the middle point, so half of us are earning more, and half are earning less. But remember, this is just the average. It doesn't tell us much about the cost of living in different parts of the country, or the fact that some jobs pay a lot more than others.

London Calling

Take London, for example. The cost of living there is sky-high, and so are the salaries. The median salary in London is around £40,000, which is a fair bit more than the UK average. But even that varies depending on the borough. In places like Kensington and Chelsea, the median salary is over £70,000. That's more than double the UK average, and it's probably why Tim can afford all those watches.

But it's not all sunshine and roses in London. The cost of living is so high that even with those big salaries, many people struggle to save money. According to a Money Advice Service report, around 16% of Londoners have less than £100 in savings. That's a scary thought, isn't it?

What's a 'Good' Salary?

So, what makes a salary 'good'? Well, it's all about what you can afford to live on, and what you want to do with your money. Some people might think a 'good' salary is one that lets them save for a house, or start a family. Others might just want to be able to afford a nice holiday every year. It's all relative, like Tim said.

But there are some guidelines out there. The UK Government defines the 'real living wage' as the amount you need to earn to cover the cost of living, including things like housing, food, and transport. It's currently set at £9.50 an hour outside of London, and £10.85 in the capital. That works out to around £19,800 a year for someone working full-time, which is a fair bit less than the average salary.

But What About the Big Bucks?

Alright, so we've talked about the average Joe, and what's considered a 'good' salary. But what about the big bucks? What's the highest salary in the UK? Well, according to the Telegraph, the highest-paid CEO in the UK is Sir Martin Sorrell, who took home a cool £48.1 million in 2015. That's more than 1,500 times the average UK salary. Not bad, eh?

But remember, not all of us can be CEO of a massive advertising company. And even if we could, it's not all about the money, is it? I mean, sure, it's nice to have a bit of spare cash to treat yourself every now and then. But at the end of the day, it's about finding a job that you love, and that makes you happy. And if you can do that, well, that's a 'good' salary in my book.
