World Cup 1966 England Team

So, grab a cuppa, get comfy, and let's dive into the world of '66, yeah?

When England Shone

We're talking '66 here, mate. The year England hosted the World Cup and brought it home, like a trophy-winning dog with a frisbee.

Now, you might be thinking, "Hang on, wasn't that the year of the infamous '66 World Cup Final?" You betcha! But let's not get ahead of ourselves. First, we need to talk about the team that made it all happen.

Meet the Squad

Alright, so we had Bobby Moore as our captain, a true gent and a legend in the making. He was like the calm eye of the storm, marshalling our defence with the grace of a ballet dancer and the strength of a ox. Well, maybe not quite a ballet dancer, but you get the picture.

Then there was Gordon Banks, our keeper. Now, this fella was something else. He had more saves than a banker on bonus day. And let's not forget the time he pulled off that incredible save against Pele. I mean, come on! Who does that?

And who could forget Geoff Hurst? The man, the myth, the legend. He was our midfield maestro, pulling the strings and scoring goals like they were going out of fashion. And spoiler alert, they kind of did, after he retired.

Onto the Finals

Right, so we've got our team, we're feeling good, and we're playing at home. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, nothing, as it happens! We sailed through the group stages, beating Hungary, Bulgaria, and Mexico. We were like a well-oiled machine, and everyone was talking about us. Even the Queen, I reckon.

Then came the knockouts. We beat Argentina 1-0, thanks to a certain Goal of the Century from Geoff Hurst. And yes, I know it's not the one you're thinking of. But we'll get to that.

Next up, Portugal. A tough game, but we came out on top, 2-1. And then, the semi-finals. We were up against West Germany, and it was a tense one. But with a goal from Hurst and a late winner from Martin Peters, we were through to the final!

The Final Countdown

And here we are, the big one. England vs. West Germany. The tension was palpable. The crowd was electric. And then, it happened. The Wembley Goal.

Geoff Hurst, with a hat-trick in a 4-2 win after extra time. Three goals in one game, in the World Cup final. I mean, come on! It's like he was showing off at this point.

And that, my friend, is how England won the World Cup in '66. It was a time of joy, of pride, and of one hell of a party. We've not stopped talking about it since. And who knows, maybe one day we'll do it again. But for now, let's just enjoy the memories, yeah?

Cheers to '66, mate. Here's to hoping we can make more memories like that in the future.
