So, Cash, What's the Deal?
Hey there, let's grab a cuppa and chat about something that's been on my mind lately. You know, the good old days when we'd jingle our pockets full of coins and notes, ready to flash the cash at the till? Well, it seems those days are a bit like a fading Polaroid, aren't they?
I mean, have you noticed? The cashiers in our local shops are starting to look at us like we've just landed from Mars when we whip out our wallets. It's like we're speaking a language they haven't heard in years. "Cash? You want to pay with cash?!"
Card, Contactless, or Even Faster...
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying cash is dead. But it's definitely taken a backseat, isn't it? I mean, who needs the hassle of counting coins when you can just tap and go? Contactless cards, mobile payments, even wearable tech - it's all happening, isn't it?

And let's not forget the big guns - Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay. They're making cash look about as relevant as a fax machine. I mean, who even has a fax machine anymore? Exactly.
But Why the Shift?
So, what's driving this cashless craze? Well, convenience is a biggie, isn't it? I mean, who wants to carry around a brick of cash when you can just tap and be done with it?
Security's another one. I don't know about you, but I've lost count of the times I've left my wallet at home, only to realize it when I'm at the checkout. With card payments, at least you've got a backup. And with mobile payments, well, you've always got your phone, right?
And then there's the whole 'going green' thing. Cash might be king, but it's not exactly eco-friendly, is it? All that paper and ink, not to mention the energy used to print it. With digital payments, at least we're doing our bit for the planet.
But What About the Old Folks?
Now, I'm not saying we should all jump on the cashless bandwagon without a thought for those who can't. I mean, what about our grandparents, or even our parents? Not everyone's tech-savvy, and not everyone wants to be.
One in 7 shops in UK has turned cashless in the past year, survey finds
And let's not forget the unbanked. According to the Financial Times, there are still around 1.3 million adults in the UK without a bank account. For them, cash is still king, and it's not as easy as just tapping a card.
So, Where Does That Leave Cash?
Well, it's not disappearing completely, is it? I mean, there's still a place for cash, especially for small transactions or when the internet's down. But it's definitely taken a backseat, isn't it?
I mean, just look at the stats. According to UK Finance, cash payments fell by 16% in 2020 alone. And that was before the pandemic really kicked in. I mean, who knows what the future holds?
But hey, that's just my two cents. Or should I say, that's just my two taps? Who knows, maybe one day we'll all be walking around with microchips in our hands, paying for our lattes with a wave. Now wouldn't that be something?
Anyway, I've rabbited on enough. What do you reckon? Are you a cash loyalist, or are you all in for the digital revolution? Let me know over another cuppa, yeah?
