Columbus Day 2026: What’s Open And Closed On October 12?

Hey there, coffee buddy! You know what's just around the corner? Columbus Day, that's what! But wait, you're thinking, "Isn't that just a day off for some, a holiday for others, and a controversy for everyone?" Well, you're not wrong, but let's not get too heavy. We're here to chat about what's open and closed on October 12, 2026. Grab your mug, let's dive in!

First things first: The basics

Columbus Day, folks! It's on a Monday this time around, so you might be wondering, "Is it a federal holiday?" Well, it's not as straightforward as you'd think. It's a federal holiday in some states, but not all. So, if you're in a state that doesn't observe it, you might be working. Bummer, right?

Now, you're probably wondering, "What about schools?" Again, it varies. Some schools will be closed, some will have a regular day. It's a good idea to check with your local school district to be sure. And hey, if you're a student, maybe you'll get lucky and have a day off!

Who's open for business?

Alright, let's talk about the places that will be open. First up, grocery stores. You know they're always there for you, rain or shine, holiday or not. So, if you run out of coffee creamer, don't panic. They've got you covered.

Retail stores, too, will be open. Black Friday might be months away, but that doesn't stop the sales! So, if you've been eyeing that new pair of shoes or that fancy coffee maker, Columbus Day might be your day.

And what about restaurants? Many will be open, but some might have reduced hours or special menus. It's always a good idea to call ahead or check their website. After all, nobody wants a case of the hangries on their day off.

And who's closed?

Now, let's talk about the places that might be closed. Banks, post offices, and government offices might be shut down if you're in a state that observes the holiday. But again, it varies, so it's always a good idea to check.

And what about public transportation? Some services might be reduced, so if you're planning on using it, check the schedule. You don't want to be left stranded on the side of the road with nothing but your wits and your phone.

But wait, there's more!

You might be wondering, "What about events? Will there be any Columbus Day parades or celebrations?" Well, that depends on where you live. Some cities have big celebrations, others not so much. It's always a good idea to check your local events calendar.

And hey, if you're feeling adventurous, you could even use the day to learn more about the real story of Christopher Columbus. You know, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It's a great way to spend a day off, if you ask me.

So, what's the verdict?

Is Columbus Day 2026 going to be a day of rest and relaxation or a day of work and shopping? It's up to you, really. Whether you're celebrating, working, or just taking a day to yourself, make the most of it. After all, it's not every day we get a day off, right?

And remember, no matter what you're doing, don't forget to take a moment to appreciate the little things. Like the fact that you've got a hot cup of coffee in your hands. Cheers, my friend!
