So, I was out for my morning jog the other day, you know, trying to keep up with those New Year's resolutions. I was pounding the pavement near Tower Bridge when I suddenly thought, "Hey, isn't this where they close the road for the London Marathon?" And wouldn't you know it, just a few weeks later, the official road closures and start times have been announced. Timing, right?
Mark Your Calendars, Folks!
Alright, so the big day is April 23rd. That's a Sunday, by the way, in case you were planning a sneaky lie-in. The elite wheelchair race kicks things off at 8:55 AM, followed by the elite men and women at 9:15 AM. But if you're running, or planning to cheer, you'll want to know that the mass race starts at 10:15 AM.
Now, I know what you're thinking, "That's all well and good, but what about the road closures?" Well, my friend, you're in luck. I've got the lowdown on that too.
Must Read
Road Closures: When and Where
First things first, the road closures start from 5 AM on race day. Yes, you read that right. 5 AM. So, if you've got an early shift, you might want to plan an alternative route. The main roads around the course will be closed until around 5 PM, but some smaller roads might stay closed until 6 PM or even later.
Now, let's talk about the course. It starts in Greenwich, winds its way through Blackheath, Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, and the Isle of Dogs, before heading back towards the finish line in Westminster. So, if you live or work anywhere near this route, you might want to check out the official route map.
And a word to the wise, if you're planning on driving anywhere near the course on race day, you might want to reconsider. Or at least give yourself plenty of extra time. Trust me, you don't want to be the person causing a traffic jam while thousands of runners are trying to set new personal bests.

Public Transport: Your Friend on Race Day
So, what's the best way to get around on race day? Well, my vote goes to public transport. The Tube, buses, and even some river services will be running as normal, and they're usually less crowded than on a typical Sunday. Just remember to check the Transport for London website for any disruptions or closures.
And if you're planning on using the DLR, you might want to note that there will be no service between Canning Town and Stratford from 7 AM until around 5 PM. So, you might want to plan an alternative route if you're heading to or from the Excel area.
Cheering Squads: Be Part of the Action!
Now, if you're not running but you want to be part of the action, there are plenty of great spots to cheer on the runners. Tower Bridge is always a big hit, as is Cutty Sark and the Embankment. Just remember to get there early to bag a good spot, and don't forget to bring some noise makers. Trust me, the runners will appreciate it!

And if you're feeling really keen, you could even join one of the official cheer squads. They've got some great spots along the route, and you'll be helping to make the day even more special for the runners. You can find out more about that on the London Marathon website.
So, Are You Ready?
Well, there you have it. The road closures and start times for the 2023 London Marathon. Whether you're running, cheering, or just trying to get around the city on race day, I hope this has helped you plan ahead. And remember, if you see me out there on the course, give me a cheer. I'll be the one gasping for breath and wondering why I thought this was a good idea!
Until next time, happy running (or cheering)!
