So, there I was, last December, standing in Trafalgar Square, trying to make a snowman out of something that looked more like wet cement. I mean, come on, London! I've seen snow before, but this was just embarrassing. That's when it hit me - December in London is like that one relative who always brings the most peculiar gifts. You never quite know what you're gonna get.
Now, before you roll your eyes and mutter something about typical British weather, let me tell you, December in London is a bit of a mixed bag. It's not all doom and gloom, and it's certainly not all snowmen made of disappointment. It's a month that likes to keep you on your toes, weather-wise.
What to Expect, Weather-wise
Alright, let's get the obvious out of the way. It's cold. Like, really cold. We're talking average highs of around 8°C (46°F) and lows dipping down to about 3°C (37°F). But hey, that's not so bad, right? I mean, it's not like we're talking about a polar expedition here.

Now, the rain. Oh, the rain. It's not as bad as they say, but, it's still pretty damp. We're looking at around 50mm (2 inches) of rain spread out over the month. So, pack your brolly, folks. You're gonna need it.
And then there's the snow. Or lack thereof, as I've so elegantly demonstrated in my Trafalgar Square tale. It does snow in London, but it's not a given. When it does, it's usually a light dusting that melts away quicker than you can say "Jack Frost". But hey, at least it gives the kids something to Instagram, right?

When the Sun Shines
Believe it or not, the sun does make an appearance in December. I know, I know, it's hard to believe. But it happens. On average, we get about 50 hours of sunshine in December. That's not too shabby, right?
And when the sun does come out, it's magical. The way it catches the frost on the ground, the way it makes the Christmas lights twinkle just a little bit brighter. It's enough to make you forget about the cold for a moment. Almost.
Dressing for the Occasion
So, you're probably wondering what to pack, right? Well, layering is your friend. Think thermals, jumpers, coats, scarves, the works. And don't forget your waterproofs. You're gonna need them.

And while we're on the subject of fashion, can we talk about those Christmas markets? The mulled wine, the roasted chestnuts, the twinkly lights... It's all so... festive. But it's also a great excuse to indulge in some retail therapy. So, go on, treat yourself. You deserve it.
Making the Most of It
December in London isn't all about the weather, though. It's about the magic of Christmas. The lights, the markets, the carols. It's about the warmth of a pub on a cold evening, the laughter of friends and family. It's about making the most of what you've got, rain or shine.
So, there you have it. December in London. It's not all bad, is it? In fact, it's pretty darn special. Just don't expect to build a snowman in Trafalgar Square. Trust me on that one.
