The world’s first university dedicated to artificial intelligence in Abu Dhabi has pushed its opening date for the inaugural class to January 2021 due to COVID-19.
Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) was set to welcome its first students in August 2020, but due to the situation caused by the coronavirus, the start of academic year has been postponed.
Dr Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and chairman of the Board of Trustees said the decision was taken to ensure the “health and well-being” of students and staff.
He said: “The university is eager and ready to welcome our first cohort of students from around the world, however, given the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic, the decision to start the academic year in 2021 has been made in the best interests of the prospective students, faculty, and staff”.
The university’s launch in October 2019 has attracted a significant amount of global interest, receiving more than 1,000 applications from 80 countries.
Upon opening, the university will offer MSc and PhD-level programmes such as Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision and Machine Learning.
All students admitted on full-time basis will be granted a privilege to complete their study with a full scholarship including 100% tuition fees, accommodation and health insurance.
