77% of shoppers in the UK would be more likely to switch to digital receipts if they knew how many trees were cut down to produce the paper versions, new research from Yocuda has found.
This research highlights how important business sustainability efforts are for consumers to continue service with them. The majority (87%) of 18-25 year olds would opt for digital receipts in an effort to reduce environmental impact.
Yocuda also found that 69% of shoppers say a retailer’s sustainability policy can massively influence their decision to shop with them. This figure jumps to 85% for the younger generation of under-25s.
“What was once seen as a small, mundane part of the shopping experience – receiving a paper receipt – is now being scrutinised for its environmental impact and inefficiency.” says Edward Drax, CEO of Yocuda.
The research further discovered the growing frustrations with physical paper receipts for consumers anyway. 3 in 4 Gen Z shoppers admit to regularly misplacing these receipts. 66% of respondents admitted to losing a receipt they needed to keep in order to complete a return or exchange.
The frustrations around these receipts are causing inconveniences and further dissatisfaction for consumers. Nearly three quarters of shoppers requested a digital receipt when it was offered.
“It’s more than just being eco-friendly. The convenience factor cannot be understated. Consumers are tired of the hassle that comes with managing paper receipts – whether it’s losing them, storing them, or rummaging through bags to find them for returns, warranty or tax purposes.
“Digital receipts offer a hassle-free solution that aligns with the fast-paced, tech-driven lives of modern shoppers. It also provides retailers with an unparalleled way of identifying customers, their behaviours and wants in store and in turn the ideal opportunity to engage post-purchase with personalised content.” Drax commented.
