UK workers face increasing office attendance mandates 

Nearly 90% of UK workers are now required to come into the office more frequently, according to Virgin Media O2’s latest report. Most employees must attend on Mondays and Wednesdays, with nearly half also working on Fridays. The proportion of companies mandating in-office work three days a week increased from 67% to 75% in the final quarter of 2024.

Despite these mandates, remote work remains popular, with 55% citing flexibility and cost savings as key reasons. Major firms like WPP and Amazon have introduced full or partial return-to-office policies, though commuting has decreased by 7%.

The impact of pretty privilege on career success 

A recent study found that “pretty privilege” is real, with 81.3% of people believing conventionally attractive individuals are more likely to be promoted or hired. Those who rated themselves as extremely attractive earned $19,945 more than those who rated themselves unattractive. CEOs were twice as likely to rate themselves as extremely attractive.

In addition, 64.2% feel pressured to alter their appearance for work, with many spending extra money on grooming and appearance-related products. Attractive individuals tend to be more successful, but confidence can also come from the effort put into one’s appearance.

Gen Z and self-diagnosis: a balanced approach to mental health 

Gen Z often turns to the internet for mental health information, but not to recklessly self-diagnose, as commonly assumed. A survey by the Made of Millions Foundation found that most young people use online resources alongside professional care. Of 970 respondents aged 13-28, nearly 75% received a clinical diagnosis, while only 5% self-diagnosed without plans for professional follow-up.

Experts like neuroscientist Uma Chatterjee stress the importance of seeking credible sources and professional guidance. While online research can be validating, experts advise following up with clinicians to ensure proper treatment and avoid misdiagnosis.
