Gordon’s career started as chef apprentice and now oversees the Isle of Eriska as Executive Manager of the island.
Gordon began his 30-year career in 1988 as a chef apprentice at Le Poulbot a ‘stunning introduction to cuisine’ that gave him a ‘gruelling but flawless template of the commitment and passion’ needed to succeed in the hospitality industry. By 1989 he was Head Chef at the Relais & Chateaux Sharrow Bay hotel and during his time there was awarded a Michelin star.
Whilst a Chef Patron at the Snooty Fox in Kirby Lonsdale, a multi-million, pound project to create fine dining at affordable prices, Gordon began to be noticed by the national press. The Daily Telegraph asked ‘Is Gordon Cartwright one of Britain’s Top Chefs?’.
In 1997 Gordon changed direction and became a Hotel and Restaurant inspector for the AA. By 2008 he was a UK and Overseas Key Account Manager, specialising in corporate relationships, and dealing with over 100 national and international hotel groups.
In 2010 Gordon became Managing Director at Visionary Dining, an active solutions company dedicated to hotel and restaurant development within the UK Hospitality Industry.
In 2013, Gordon was delighted to become General Manager and Chef Director at the Gilpin Hotel & Lake House. During his time at Gilpin he initiated the search for a new chef with a TV show, Chefs of Trial. A programme in which Alex Polizzi, of ‘The Hotel Inspector’ fame, would aid restaurants in their search for a new head chef.
Gordon headed further north beginning life as the General Manager of the Isle of Eriska Hotel, Spa and Island in spring 2016. Already Gordon has implemented an investment in the interior décor in Eriska’s public areas and overseen the launch of four new Hilltop Reserves – one bedroom self-catering lodges located a short walk from the hotel.
